Xia Houwen (b. 1935), a native of Fen Yi, Jiangxi Province, is a China National Crafts Master, Council Member of the National Committee for Ancient Ceramics, and Council Member of the Zhejiang Provincial Crafts Association. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Jingdezhen Ceramic University in 1963 and was assigned to Longquan Celadon Factory that same year, dedicating his career to celadon design and ceramic research. Since 1993, he has enjoyed the State Council Special Allowance, and in 2006, he was awarded the China National Crafts Lifetime Achievement Award.
Over four decades, Xia designed and created over 5,000 celadon works, pioneering innovations such as Ge Kiln daily-use ceramics and hybrid Ge-Di Kiln celadon. He successfully developed groundbreaking techniques like "celadon underglaze decoration", "celadon linglong (hollow) daily-use ware", and "ultra-thin celadon", earning nearly 50 provincial and national awards since the 1980s. Xia’s works blend monumental forms, lustrous celadon glazes, intricate crackled textures, and innovative decorations, harmonizing ancient aesthetics with modern practicality. His legacy lies in bridging traditional celadon craftsmanship with contemporary artistry, cementing his status as a pioneer of Longquan celadon’s global revival
